The JBL Stage 82 (Model: JBLSUBST82AM) is an affordable, entry-level 8-inch component car audio subwoofer engineered to deliver strong low-frequency output with minimal distortion

The JBL Stage 82 is built to offer excellent performance for the money. It features a lightweight yet exceptionally rigid polypropylene woofer cone that moves smoothly without flexing under heavy acoustic loads. The cone is held in place by a high-roll rubber surround, ensuring structural durability and high efficiency when paired with various aftermarket car amplifiers.
To ensure long-term reliability, JBL subjects these woofers to intense environmental testing, including freezing, baking, shaking, and running them at full power for days at a time. Each unit is individually voiced by transducer engineers to preserve the clean, hard-hitting signature bass that JBL is known for.

Sealed Box: JBL recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.35 ft³. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: JBL recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 0.42 ft³ using one 1.97" diameter x 6.7" long port, resulting in a tuning frequency of 50 Hz. They also recommend using a sub-sonic filter. Ported enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from a given amount of power.

Free-air Mounting: In addition to being compatible with sealed and ported enclosures, the woofer can be used in free-air applications. A free-air subwoofer is designed to be mounted on a baffle board, which separates the front of the speaker from the back. For instance, you could mount this woofer to a board attached to the rear deck or placed in the trunk against the rear seat. The trunk acts as the enclosure housing the subwoofer. Because there is no specific volume of air to stiffen the suspension, the free-air power handling is approximately half that of the woofer in a box, in this case 100 watts RMS.

Band Pass: JBL also recommends prefabricated band-pass enclosures. Band-pass enclosures often provide the most output available from any amplifier and subwoofer combination, but at the expense of sonic accuracy.
